EGMS is proud of its academic and technology literacy programs.  Each student has a Chromebook that is used for simulations, research, acceleration, assessment, collaboration and more.  We are also part of a CU Boulder project funded by the National Science Foundation to teach programming skills to middle school students and decrease the gender gap in STEM learning.

  • Information on Testing
As you're planning spring appointments and travel, please keep in mind that students will be participating in state testing the mornings of March 28th and 29th and April 18th and 19th.  Additionally, 8th graders will test the mornings of April 12th & 13th.

The expectation of the Every Child Succeeds Act (replaced No Child Left Behind) is that 95% of our students complete testing or we are at risk of losing funding.

However, at a much more individual level, we do use test scores to help in placing students in appropriate classes and guiding instruction.  At both the middle school and high school, decisions around everything from interventions to advanced classes take test scores into consideration when making these important decisions.

Finally, while it may seem a long way off, students are going to be taking tests in their high school years and beyond that have a direct, significant impact on their futures; this could be the ACT for college admittance or the ASVAB for military service or the written exam required to obtain a driver's license.  Not only do teachers receive critical information about their students from these tests, students are also participating in critical thinking, reading, writing, & mathematics, while also building their test-taking skills.

I encourage you to allow your student to participate in testing.  Helping your student understand that we all take tests at certain points in our lives is important.  These tests are certainly not the only measure of a student's success; they merely test certain skills on certain days.  As a staff, we wholeheartedly acknowledge that there are multiple factors that are important to consider in measuring a student's academic growth and aptitude.  This is just one of the tools we use.

Please don't hesitate to contact me with additional questions or concerns regarding testing.
